Cannabidiol stickers - Labelling for products containing CBD
CBD is an abbreviation of CannaBiDiol and is a non-psychoactive extract from the cannabis plant. The compound was discovered around 80 years ago but has only recently been legalised for commercial use. The medicinal benefits of CBD, and hemp/cannabis in general, have long been debated and pressure has been brought to bear on successive authorities and governmental organisations to legalise some or all of them.
In 2017, CBD was cleared to be used as an additive for various applications but only under certain conditions. The main condition for the cultivation and sale of this substance is the levels of THC in the refined additive. THC is the psychoactive TetraHydroCannabidiol that produces the famed effect when smoking cannabis and should not be present at levels above 0.2%.
The recent legalisation of CBD or hemp-based ingredients has prompted an explosion of products that contain it, these products can be ingested, inhaled or applied topically. So oil drops, coffee, vaping, lotions, tinctures, even sweets and gummies can be purchased to give varying doses of Cannabidiol. Suggested benefits include pain relief, improved cognition, reduction in anxiety levels and increased mobility, although many of these have yet to be fully investigated.

The pronunciation is usually with an "oy-ul" sound at the end as in oil, however, it's actually "iy-ol" from the word diol which is a chemical term that refers to the 2 hydroxyl (or alcohol) groups in its chemical formula that distinguishes it from THC. CBD is obtained from the hemp plant rather than the cannabis plant because the concentrations of the required liquid are more favourable.
